Teaching Principles
The 10 Commandments of the Phonics Train
Non-negotiable principles every Phonics Train teacher upholds — every school, every class, every day.
We teach reading every day in all classes.
We develop all the Big 5 skills of reading.
We start with alphabet recognition.
We teach sounds, names, sight words, and stories from Baby Class.
We teach all single sounds and their letter names in Baby Class.
We teach short and long vowel sounds clearly.
We only use onset and rhyme to blend words in kindergarten.
We strictly introduce syllables in P.1.
We only use previously taught sounds to form words.
We do not read exams for our learners (after Baby Class Term 2).
